We'd like to create a section type which can perform some simple lookups from external systems via a basic "web service", such as a URL where a parameter contains the notebook page or collection key. Results would be displayed as HTML (not necessarily a siomple table - could be multiple different sections on the page...)

This would be similar to how the "DBTable" fields work, where placeholders in the SQL query can be automatically replaced with (eg) the collection key.

Is this possible with any of the "out of the box" field types ? The "URL display" field can be configured with a fixed URL, or the end user can enter one, but there seems to be no way to create a URL which will automatically reflect the current collection in which the section is placed, even using a custom Form Tool or Field Listener.

Thanks for any suggestions

Tim

Hello,

Though not exactly what you are looking for, collection key can be a parameter for EXE:

Thanks for the reply - what we were looking for was a field type which could be used to pull information from [eg.] an external registration system, where products from the ELN would be registered along with a notebook Id and "page number", and the section could be configured with a URL like "http://someserver/getInfo?nb=%%notebookname%%?page=%%entrynumber%%"

The existing fields don't seem to allow for this type of use, even using a custom-coded listener/tool.

I think we'll use the DBTable for now, but ideally there would be a "web" equivalent which would allow for more varied data structure/display.

Regards

Tim

Alternatively you could shell out to a browser running outside ELN. This could be done with a custom Python, or regular (C#) FormTool or Command.
